Governors

"You have filled my heart with Joy" Psalms 4:7

Governors and trustees are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards. The role of the Governing Body is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school. Time and time again Ofsted (the national inspection body for schools) has noted that the most effective schools demonstrate effective leadership and management, including by the Governing Body.

Strategic Leadership

School Governors and trustees provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. They appoint the Headteacher and it is Governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, working with the Headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

Each individual Governor is a member of a Governing Body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual Governors may not act independently of the rest of the Governing Body and decisions have joint responsibility.

The role of the Governing Body is a strategic one with three key functions:

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

Organisation

The full Governing Body at Ashby Church of England Primary School meets twice per School Term and operates within a Scheme of Delegation making clear the way in which decision making authority lies within the various individuals and teams.

The Governing Body also appoints Committees which meet once each term and allow for work to be divided and managed more effectively. In 2016/17, the following Committees have been established;

  • Resources, Health and Safety and Premises (RHSP)
  • School Improvement

The Terms of Reference under which these Committees operate are agreed by the full Governing Body.

Full details of Governor Meeting Attendance are available for inspection.

Who are the Governors?

There are a number of different types of Governors serving at Ashby Church of England Primary School;

  • Co-Opted: Appointed by the Governing Body on the basis of specific required skills
  • Local Education Authority (LEA): Appointed by the Local Authority
  • Ex-Officio and Foundation: Appointed by the church (Church of England school)

Full Governor Details including Terms of Office, Pecuniary Interests, governance roles in other schools and material interests are available for inspection.
