Years 5 and 6

Staffing

This year our mixed Year 5/6 class is being taught by Miss Butler,  Mrs Burrows will teach our Year 5 class and Mr Watts will teach our Year 6 class.  The whole year 5/6 team work closely in collaboration with each other to give your children exciting learning opportunities which promote our School’s vision – to achieve their full potential, challenge creative minds and nurture new skills/talents. Each Tuesday, Mr Murray teaches Music, Mrs Meadowcroft teaches French and Mr Slaney teaches P.E. to the children.

Our classes are supported by an amazing and dedicated team - Mrs Meadowcroft, Mrs Sutton, Mrs Hall, Mrs Glover and Miss Connolly, together with Mrs Clark who also provides ELSA support for our children, promoting their positive well-being.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is organised as part of a rolling programme of topics across Key Stage Two. Each topic contains a coverage of key skills and breadth across the curriculum, which enables links to be made across subjects - promoting creativity and enjoyment for all children. At Ashby C.E. Primary School, our aim is to encourage creativity, develop critical thinking and provide opportunities for the children to embed their learning into their long-term memory, providing them with skills for life and learning experiences that they will treasure!

Reading

Children in Year 5 and 6 have reading sessions with a member of staff weekly. Some children will also read individually to an adult or take part in intervention groups to develop their reading fluency and understanding. Children choose from a selection of books available from the School Library, which are appropriate to their reading level and provide challenge to extend and deepen their reading skills. Children may change their reading books anytime during the week once they have completed them.

Maths

Times Tables Rock Stars

Children in Year 5 and 6 are encouraged to compete and improve their own performance in maths as part of the Times Tables Rock Stars online forum. This is a fun, interactive way of improving speed and mathematical agility in rapid recall of times tables up to 12x12. We would really appreciate it if you could support your child in continuing to practise their times tables up to 12x12 so they know them off by heart in order to enable them to confidently use and apply these in different mathematical contexts
